The top 6 tips to consider for your big move day.

How to Plan For Your Moving Day

As anyone will tell you, moving house can be a rather overwhelming experience. This is why it’s important to make this experience a more pleasant event for everyone involved. Fortunately, this is an easy enough task to manage. Below, you can find out all the steps to properly plan for your moving day:

  1. Make a List

There are so many things that you need to handle before and on moving day. Therefore, it can be difficult to keep track of all these details, ensuring that you will forget at least some of these tasks. To avoid this scenario, make a list of everything that needs to be done.

Make your list even more organized by separating it into a timeline. Write down what you have to do according to a particular day. This will give you a clearer idea of when things need to be handled. Doing this can make things less rushed as well.

2. Take Stock of Your Belongings

Most people tend to hoard items they don’t need. Avoid taking these unnecessary items to your new residence. Thus, your first step should be to examine your belongings and determine which ones are required and which are not.

After you have done this, consider which items can be sold and which ones will need to be tossed. If you sell some of the belongings that you don’t need, you will end up making some extra money on the side!

3. Stock Up on Packing Supplies

It can be rather frustrating to have to stop packing simply because you have run out of supplies. So, make a supply run ahead of time. Ensure that you have more than enough boxes, tape, twine, packing paper, bubble wrap, plastic sheets, scissors, and markers.

If you are planning on moving large or delicate items such as refrigerators or cupboards, you will need moving blankets as well. Of course, regular blankets and carpets will work just as well. However, the should be large enough to fit over the item that you will be transporting.

4. Start by Packing Non-Essential Items

One of the reasons people put off packing until the last moment is because they use many of these items daily. Nonetheless, this doesn’t mean that all your belongings should only be packed just before you move. After all, there are plenty of items that you may not use all the time.

This includes winter or out-of-season clothing, extra pans and cutlery, infrequently used appliances, and non-essential items and furniture. Thus, you should first pack these items. Taking this measure will reduce how much you have to pack closer to the moving date.

5. Pack Items in an Orderly Fashion

To make it easier to unpack and re-organize your items, make sure that you do so in an orderly manner. For instance, try to pack items from a certain location – book cupboard, clothes rack, etc. – together. Make sure to label which spot they came from. Then, when you need to unpack your items, you know precisely where everything is supposed to go.

Similarly, always pack and label boxes according to which room they were placed in. This way, you or your movers know exactly which room to place the boxes in at the new residence. Needless to say, this makes things a lot less confusing for you.

6. Have an Essentials Bag

When you move into your new residence, it will be a couple of days until you are fully unpacked. This is why it’s important to have a separate essentials bag for each member of the family. These bags should contain fresh clothes, toiletries, bedding, electronic devices, chargers, etc. Thus, you can live comfortably until all of your boxes have been unpacked.

These are the top things you should do when moving house. Follow these guidelines and you can virtually guarantee that your moving experience will be a great deal more relaxing for every person involved.
